You can help your family member if you live at a distance by doing a variety of things. First you may help the caregiver that is there by coming in and providing respite care for a few days every couple of months. You can help them pay bills at a distance through internet banking. You may even be able to check the references of those individuals helping your loved one from a distance. Just because you live at a distance does not mean you cannot be a caregiver.
